Celebrity auctioneer Darren Julien has organised yet another sale at the Hollywood Legends auction in Beverly Hills. The auction which will take place from March 31 to April 1 will see the memorabilia of many famous celebrities being sold out to the highest bidder. While one will see Charlie Chaplin's cane, Clark Gable's jacket from Gone With the Wind and Charlton Heston's staff from The Ten Commandments, the spotlight is on the belongings of singer Whitney Houston who recently passed away. In fact many feel that it is too early for her personal belongings to go up for sale.

Two of her most cherished items, the black dress made in velvet and the sparkling pearl earrings have been included in this luxury auction. To counter all comments against Whitney's belongings' auctions, Darren Julien said that he believes that the auction signifies a celebration of her life, something she truly deserves since she lived a life that most would envy. Trying to keep people away from these things only fearing it could offend some is unfair to the lady whose items are now a part of great historic memorabilia. Hence, they deserve to be showcased and spread across to as many people as possible. The floor length black dress which is valued at $1,000 is much likely to be sold for a price steeper than the quoted one. The vest and earrings which are priced at $400 and $600 respectively will also be sold at the same time.

New York’s auction on May 2 will witness a one of its kind auction. The famous Edvard Munch’s ‘only’ privately owned version of ‘The Scream’ is finally set to be sold by Sotheby’s auction house. What makes it completely exclusive is the fact that the painting has only four versions and this one is now going have a new owner. And we are sure many art connoisseurs are vying to add it to their collection. Currently owned by a Norwegian businessman, Petter Olsen (who is a Munch’s companion), the pastel version has been preserved in the same condition as it was seen when freshly painted. This version goes back to the year of 1895. The painting is one of a kind and is expected to rope in at least $80 million. One can only expect the price to go higher. Olsen’s love for art cannot go unnoticed as he has confirmed that the proceeds would be utilised to build a new museum, an art centre and a hotel at his farm in Norway.

Karl Lagerfeld who recently dabbled with the camera to shoot the Spring/Summer Chanel print ad campaign now steps into the director's shoes to create a film. Well the man who never fails to surprise and allure has made a small silent film and it’s called ‘My New Friend Boy’. Wondering what got him to do that? It’s the new handbag collection by Chanel: Chanel Boy. You will see Alice Dellal featuring in the film and her chase to get hold of her Boy bag that makes up that gist of the story. Apart from the Chanel touch, you notice Dellal’s ripped tights that are her classic trademark and of course her dreadlocks! Just can’t miss. The piano playing in the backdrop adds to the romantic allure that is oh so Chanel.

A self-confessed oenophile, Daniel Lalonde, President and CEO, Moët & Chandon, waxes lyrical about the brand’s unparalleled heritage and its sparkling future.

From sporting triumphs, to christening ships, to prestigious film festivals or even royal weddings, this effervescent gold liquid is the universal symbol of celebration. The ubiquitous tipple of choice, champagne’s iconic celebratory status can be attributed mostly to the efforts of the world’s leading champagne house, Moët & Chandon, owned by luxury goods conglomerate, Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton (LVMH). In the words of its President and CEO, Daniel Lalonde, Moët & Chandon is unlike any other luxury brand. And he would know, having previously served as CEO of LVMH Watch and Jewelry and later, as President and CEO of Louis Vuitton North America.
“Moët & Chandon is a House with 300 years of brand savvy, a rare and exceptional heritage, and a rich history of legendary leadership. [It is] a House with savoir-faire that creates champagne—something that people share for the most special moments in their lives, all around the world.”

Preserved Legacy

Since its inception in 1743 by Claude Moët, Moët & Chandon has earned itself the prestigious title of leading producer of premium champagne. Lalonde shares, “Each of our champagnes has its own special place, from the exceptional Grand Vintage Collection to the legendary Moët Rosé Impérial.” But their quintessential champagne is the iconic Moët & Chandon Impérial. It was in 1863 that Moët & Chandon adopted the trademark ‘Impérial’, as a tribute to its earliest and one of its most celebrated patrons, Napoleon.
Lalonde adds, “It’s a champagne for every occasion, and it is the most emblematic expression of the Moët & Chandon style.” The House continues to break new ground in the field of oenology, affecting a fine balance between centuries-old legacy and innovation. Lalonde explains, “We recently launched Moët Ice Impérial, which is the world’s first-ever champagne specifically developed to be enjoyed on ice.” Champagne on ice? This rather non-traditional way of sipping champagne is perfect for daytime celebrations in international hotspots. Lalonde asserts, “It is a new way to drink champagne, and is faithful to the House’s tradition of innovation.”

Vintage Culture

Of course, any talk of Moët’s exceptional heritage is incomplete without at least a mention of its vineyards. Spread over 1,200 hectares—the largest holdings in the Champagne region—are the very best of grapes and terroir that the region has to offer. Then there are the famous Moët cellars—a winding maze, almost 30 km long, dating back to the 1700s—and home to some of the most famed vintage wines. One such vintage is the Grand Vintage 1911, a truly rare wine of legend. Protected from excessive oxidation, the wine was conserved for 100 years under optimum aging conditions in the House’s fabled vintage cellars—Grand Vintage Reserve. Lalonde proudly states, “It is one of our most distinguished champagnes, so much so that it holds our rarely-bestowed description: inclassifiable, or unclassifiable. That’s to say, it is so incomparably excellent that it is a category all its own.” Of course, to share the splendour of this rare centenarian champagne, Moët & Chandon held a globally synchronised charity auction on November 11, 2011 in 11 international cities.
And in a nod to the House’s commitment to serving the community, the proceeds will be donated to local charities. Today, the Moët & Chandon Grand Vintage Collection includes 68 vintages from across the ages, dating back to 1842—the largest collection in the world. Lalonde adds, “Moët & Chandon’s vintage champagnes are the essence of a single year, and together form the most important
collection of vintages in the world. From the harvest, to the assemblage and even the historic highlights that shaped that year, the Moët Grand Vintages each tell a unique story.” The power to declare a harvest vintage rests with their Chef de Cave and is based on his interpretation of the harvest.

Patrons Over Time

Over the years, from nobility to notable personalities, Moët & Chandon has acquired legions of admirers for its grandeur and prized offerings. In 2009, Scarlett Johansson was named as the muse of the brand. Lalonde explains this glamourous association, “Scarlett Johansson is Moët & Chandon’s brand ambassador because she perfectly embodies the success and glamour that define the maison. Her performances transform everyday experiences into intense emotions and create iconic moments to be shared. The most recent advertising campaign starring Johansson was shot by renowned British photographer Tim Walker during Moët & Chandon’s ‘Tribute to Heritage’ celebration. The three visuals depict Scarlett at Trianon, the Moët family home in Epernay, France. The romantic motifs and images perfectly embody the glamour and grandeur inherent to both Scarlett and Moët.” Lalonde concludes, “The idea of celebration is a global one. Moët & Chandon is a symbol of glamourous celebration, of sharing successful moments and marking important achievements.” And it is this notion that resonates in cultures around the world.
Santé!

Celebrities all over the world often get roped in to endorse brands or their products. A recent addition to this trend has been that of Monica Bellucci who is now associated with the famous international brand Dolce & Gabbana. The Monica Lipstick Collection will be stocked in stores on May 12. The collection represents the 'state of mind' that a woman is in and hence, has six different shades each marking a different emotion. Some days ask for bold and buoyant colours while some others ask you to settle for pastels. The collection allows a woman to indulge her mercurial nature and many moods. Each lipstick is handy at a price of $32.

The pioneers of D&G talk very highly of their ambassador and take a lot of pride in being associated with her for over 20 years now. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are still as enamoured by their muse and said that Monica's beauty can never fade and she sparkles more every year. They think she's a true Italian icon and perfectly suits the woman who can define D&G. This chic and creative association of Monica and D&G will continue to blossom and with renewed vigour; as she has been incorporated as a fresh face in their beauty collection.

Recently-appointed CEO Wilhelm Schmid talks brand strategy as he gets behind the wheel of the German watchmaking company A. Lange & Söhne.

From automobiles to timepieces; from being the head of sales and marketing for BMW in South Africa to your appointment as CEO of A. Lange & Söhne… how did this come about?
992 Some people think that making this transition is difficult, and it was difficult, as they are different industries. However, I had a small advantage because I was always very much into watches. I’ve loved watches all my life! I was passionate enough to go deeper into the brand and the manufactory, which made it a bit easier for me. A year has gone by since I joined A. Lange & Söhne, but it feels like it’s been 10 years. When I think back to my time at BMW, it feels like a decade ago. I had a steep learning curve from both, business and company points of view. I’ve also settled in at Glashütte, working with brand managers around the world and running the manufactory, which was a challenge in the beginning.

Do you see any parallels between the two product categories?
992 Both are German brands with a global presence. They have a sharp profile—I think that our profile is sharper than that of BMW. This is because BMW offers a range of options, whereas our focus is on solid shareholder structure. There are some similarities, but there are also a few differences. Unlike BMW, A. Lange & Söhne is a small company; BMW is one of the 30 biggest companies in Germany. So you can imagine, simply from a management point of view that it is a different ball game. I like what we have today because it’s almost like a family business and there is the spirit of a family business within A. Lange & Söhne.

You mentioned that although you’ve been with the company for a year, it feels like a decade…
992 Yes, it feels that way because of the learning curve. Every day is a challenge; I travel and find out that the brand’s challenges in Asia are different from Europe or even the US. At the same time, you learn from the players in the industry—customers, retailers and even journalists. The amount of information that one has to capture, file and absorb—that alone perhaps gives me the feeling that my BMW days are long gone.

What are your plans for A. Lange & Söhne?
992 The challenge—or what I call our duty— is that the brand’s DNA always remains stable. While we have to answer to our customers, we must never forget where we come from. A. Lange & Söhne is not an experiment. It is a brand that should stay for the next 100 years and that’s how we will treat it. So, for us, the focus is on the long-term development of the brand. We will not opt for quick wins even if that has a consequence. We want to build a brand that will always be A. Lange & Söhne—recognisable from the products, the way we communicate and even our points of sale where you meet us.

A. Lange & Söhne has always practised a more discreet form of communication. Is this likely to change?
992 Usually, A. Lange & Söhne is not the first watch purchase of anyone. People who buy an A. Lange & Söhne timepiece have made their way into the world of watches. They know about brands and us, as well. I wouldn’t call them experts, but they are knowledgeable. This is, of course, one customer group. Then there is a customer group that wants more than this. We personally welcome such a customer, who, once in his lifetime, wants to see how these watches are made. So for a very select group of people—we can’t do this on a big scale—we offer the opportunity to try their hand at what our people do. Additionally, we do offer the Academy course, which is extended to very few people.

You must be receiving requests for customised timepieces? Given the scale of production, how do you treat such requests?
992 Presently, we are building 28 different movements. This in itself is complex. If we start to make individual watches, it will be unfair to our other customers because we would have to reduce the number of pieces that we produce. At the moment, we do some very limited pieces, such as presenting a customised Zeitwerk for a charity auction in Singapore. But these are exceptions; not the rule.

Which is your favourite timepiece?
992 It’s like asking me to pick my favourite child. By picking one, you imply that you don’t like the others as much. However, I must admit that if I had to attend a black-tie event, I would choose the Saxonia Thin because that watch makes you feel perfectly dressed. My day-to-day watch is usually a Datograph Perpetual Calendar. With its big dial and legible numerals, I can read the time easily, making it especially convenient. It’s also a very classical combination of complications. One of the advantages of my job is that I’m spoilt for choice! [laughs]

How did you develop a passion for food?

994 As a child, I excitedly watched my uncle, who is a chef by profession, working in the kitchen of a popular restaurant in Montecatini Terme. It was from him that my passion for this craft grew and, thereafter, culminated into my appointment as a chef. When you are immersed in something from the start, you inevitably develop a passion and fondness for it.

What is your philosophy behind cooking?

994 I believe in a ‘simple food’ philosophy, which lays emphasis on incorporating basic cooking techniques to retain the vital flavours of fresh, seasonal ingredients. Very often, simple flavours are overpowered with the use of modern cooking techniques.

What is your favourite food destination?

994 Singapore is my preferred gourmet destination as it has a diverse food culture, which perfectly balances traditional flavours and futuristic cooking styles. The country offers the choicest of delicacies from China, Japan, Malaysia and its neighbouring Asian countries, along with the best Western influences. It represents an ideal fusion of East and West and allows your palate to experience a wide variety of flavours.

What are your favourite dishes?

994 The Pear and Ricotta Ravioli is a preparation I treasure the most, as I personally savour and love fruit and cheese pairings. Also, this preparation was one of my first creations. My most popular preparation is the seafood risotto with a traditional
home-style fish soup.

Tell us more about Tuscan food.

994 Tuscan food is renowned for its fluent flavours and simple cooking styles. The preparations are made with bountiful seasonal produce and traditional cooking techniques, which retain the finer nuances of every ingredient. The Tuscan region in Italy is known for its premium wine produce, and with wines being indigenous to the region, wine pairing has become a part of the dining
culture in Tuscany. Wine goes a long way in drawing out the flavours of a dish, and enhances the dining experience for those who enjoy drinking wine.

Who are your inspirations?

994 My biggest inspiration is Chef Bartoli, who has been my mentor and is the Executive Chef at Grand Hotel & La Pace in Montecatini Terme.

How do you go about creating your culinary masterpieces?

994 My dish composition is determined by the best seasonal ingredients available in the market. I choose one distinct seasonal ingredient and prepare the same to enhance its natural flavours. Thereafter, I complement the main preparation with two other light accompaniments, which do not overpower the essence of the main ingredient. An ideal preparation is one that has flavours that maintain their exclusivity while subtly complementing each other, to enhance the taste. I abide by very simple cooking
techniques and enjoy showcasing the traditional culinary lineage of Italy.

What is your take on Indian food?

994 The diversity of flavours in Indian cuisine has always intrigued me and during this visit to Mumbai, I endeavour to explore the vivid flavours presented by the city.

Art In a Watch

If you talk about art in watches, there’s almost every major house of haute horlogerie that you could list down, owing to the art of fine watchmaking that they specialise in, besides the more visually aesthetic arts like gem-setting, detailing in design, enamel work, etc. However, when art is directly influenced by an artist or a prominent piece of artwork, the connection between watchmaking and art becomes real on another level. And that is the case with Vacheron Constantin’s Métiers d’Art–Chagall & l’Opéra de Paris watch.

Among the most artistic watches the Maison has ever made, this watch was inspired by the fresco on the ceiling of the amphitheatre in the Opera Garnier in Paris. The watch was first presented in 2010 at a gala event celebrating 30 years of the Paris National Opera, held at the Opera Garnier. It was spoken of during the opera, at the gala, as attention was drawn towards the ceiling, which was painted by renowned artist Marc Chagall, who was inspired by music, opera and the performing arts. And it is this painting that is actually replicated onto the watch by Vacheron Constantin. The handpainted dial features the time-honoured Geneva technique of grand feu enamelled miniature painting, a method that the Maison has mastered, which is evident from the watches in the Métiers d’Art series. Taking the Métiers d’Art–Chagall & l’Opéra de Paris series forward was a watch that Vacheron Constantin launched in April 2010. This watch, called Hommage to P. I. Tchaïkovski, is a tribute to composer Tchaïkovski and his opera, Swan Lake. Swan Lake was the inspiration for Chagall, who created a mural depicting the iconic opera production, which has again been captured in the form of an enamel painting on the dial of this second watch.

To add to this collection, there will be 13 other watches that will be crafted over the next three years. Each will be dedicated to the composers appearing in Chagall’s monumental work. They include Adam, Moussorgski, Mozart, Wagner, Berlioz, Rameau, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Verdi, Beethoven, Gluck and Bizet. This is certainly one range of timepieces that draw inspiration from several great personalities from the arts, establishing a strong and unique connection between horlogerie and art.

Art In Jewellery

The eclectic Art Deco style, which emerged in the 1920s, has influenced a wide range of design, including architecture, fashion, film, graphic design and even jewellery. Art Deco, as a style, merged together modernity, elegance and functionality in all areas of design and was also a major influence in artistic styles like pop art. Unlike most artistic movements, this style did not have any political or social motivation and was purely for decorative purposes. The Art Deco style was a mixture of broken lines, dots, circles, sunburst motifs and a wealth of other geometric patterns.

The jewellery house of Cartier has drawn several geometric codes from the Art Deco movement for their collections, with the stark use of black and white colours, and circles and spirals. One such collection is the Cartier Attraction in Black and White—a beautiful collection composed of geometric patterns, shapes and forms, and the juxtaposition between black and white, still reflecting modernity in design. The opposing colours and the use of spiral in the diamond coils create an almost hypnotic effect. The sparkling white diamonds are a contrast to the black, highlighting the concentric circular movement even further. Whether it is diamonds or white ceramic, the virginal quality of the colour stands out against the severity of black, and makes a perfect balance. The colours and designs play to both extremes, and yet, balance each other out so simply that the magnificence is plain to see. Perfect for a glamourous night out or a breezy daytime event, this collection is a picture of abstract beauty.

Art On Wheels

Design, in any form, can in some way or the other be regarded as art. With an unusual power to bind and bring diverse worlds together, the partnerships formed with art are even more memorable. Late last year, Mercedes-Benz unveiled one of the two, the S-Class Art Edition in partnership with Saffronart, one of India’s leading auction houses. This limited edition car was designed to be different, and in every stroke, to be inspired by artistic beauty. With the finest finish, trims and fittings, the experience inside an S-Class is one of luxury, as is the experience of taking in a classic masterpiece. This car is a fine blend between luxury and innovation. A collector of vintage cars, Dinesh Vazirani, Co-founder and CEO of Saffronart, regards a beautiful car as a work of art in itself.

Mercedes-Benz values aesthetics and hence created a car that reflects that belief. In a lustrous Designo Mocha Black colour, the car is visually appealing; the single tone leather, in Designo Deep White provides a stark contrast, as well as comfort, owing to the leather sourced from southern Germany and crafted by highly experienced upholsterers. Moving onto the trim, only the finest handpicked wood, piano lacquer, leather and stone are used for the detailing in crafting this car. If it’s innovation you’re after, the Harman Kardon Logic 7® surround sound system, the rear seat entertainment system, the unique split view display technology, and the über-luxurious champagne chiller are some of the attractions offered in this masterpiece. It is a perfect amalgamation of aesthetics, art and technology. “Both Saffronart and Mercedes-Benz deeply value aesthetics and have constantly endeavoured to innovate and to serve their customers. Through our partnership, we explore and engage with the changing face of aesthetics in India, as influenced by its long-standing traditions, as well as contemporary trends,” says Dinesh.

With this model, both companies are looking to bridge the gap between technology and lifestyle. “Mercedes-Benz is indistinguishable from a refined and luxurious lifestyle and we have consistently set newer benchmarks for style, quality and luxury for our connoisseurs. We are delighted to be associated with Saffronart and to support the creativity and excellence in art. It is a proud moment for us where our wealth of innovation in the creation of automobiles has merged with the unique and imaginative world of art and culture,” adds Peter Honegg, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.

Taking a cue from the classics, vintage furniture is a trend that has never really gone out of style. Whether authentic antique pieces, or pieces inspired by the love of all things vintage, it effectively manages to create the lasting appeal of a bygone era.

Down Memory Lane
Many tend to think of vintage furniture as simply old furniture. For Raseel Gujral Ansal, Creative Head, Casa Paradox, the term ‘vintage’ holds much more meaning than that. “Vintage furniture reflects a sense of maturity and fine craftsmanship that is held in great esteem by age. I feel that vintage furniture’s omnipresence never allowed it to go out of style.” According to her, the furniture gives you a chance to decorate your home in a unique style. “The nostalgia involved with antique furnishing and its unmatched allure is spellbinding. Fine craftsmanship was always admired and in demand, and so furniture began to pass through the generations accruing in value right up to the present day,” she adds.
Taking the idea of vintage furniture further in India, Arredo Classic, the Italian furniture brand, known for its classical style of furniture, recently launched its first flagship store at Blues Home at The Gallery in New Delhi. Currently on display at the store are four collections—Mythos, Raffaello, Giotto and Liberty.
Lorena Fulgini, Marketing Head, Arredo Classic explains that the central theme running through the collections is royalty and elegance. “Vintage furniture is our style. Our designs have evolved over the years. Our collections are defined by lacquer finishes, pale colours, gold leaf ornaments and frames. The latest of our collections, Liberty takes inspiration from Greek ornamentation.” In order to give it a slight contemporary twist, gold framing has been used. While Victorian and Art Nouveau styles of vintage furniture are often the reference point for contemporary designers seeking inspiration, Lorena describes the Liberty collection as neoclassical, since it’s a mix of styles. The result, of course, is a collection that’s opulent and elegant.

Italian style bedroom furniture by The Great Eastern Home

Small-space Living
Ornate as it may be, one might think that space constraints, especially in the metros, might pose a problem in going the vintage way. But Lorena offers a solution. “Although [vintage] furniture is meant for larger houses, there’s a large variety of elements in each collection. If there’s a studio or small apartment, you could use any one of the elements.” So a small China cabinet or a wall plate would work well to create a similar look in a smaller space.

Melting Pot
Fusing vintage furniture with contemporary pieces is also emerging as a popular trend in interiors. Raseel believes that nothing conveys a true sense of style like mixing vintage and contemporary looks. “Vintage décor can be whimsical and romantic. Modern colours and patterns with vintage accessories and accent pieces are a great way to make your space look vintage-chic.” Lorena too, agrees that fusion is something we can look forward to in the coming year. “Fusion is really big. People like mixing different styles. A customer may opt for our furniture for their living room and like a contemporary, minimalist feel in the bedroom.”

For those looking for a taste of nostalgia, vintage décor is definitely the way to go. Accentuate your home with elements or go all the way, as it casts a spell with its old-world charm.

Omega, the prestigious Swiss watchmaker, introduced the all new Seamaster Planet Ocean at an event in Mumbai yesterday.

Brand Ambassador Abhishek Bachchan, who has been associated with the brand since almost six years presented the watch, following a spectacular show by divers flown in specially from Russia. Speaking on the occasion, the dapper actor stated. "OMEGA'S Seamaster Planet Ocean range is very special to me because of its remarkable looks and style dovetailed with technology splendour. The watch series holds a very high quotient of brilliance which is definitely hard to match."

The Seamaster range has been synonymous with divers since the nascent days of ocean explorations. The range was given a further boost with the launch of the Planet Ocean range in 2005. The Planet Ocean range was created as a tribute to Omega's long standing legacy of diving watches. The Seamaster Planet Ocean is available in three sizes in addition to a chronograph version.

Furthering its association with ocean exploration, OMEGA and environmental activist, photographer and filmmaker Yann Arthus-Bertrand will also be making a film to raise awareness about protecting the seas.

Even today, the quintessential entertainer continues to surprise with her choice of projects. Recently, on the release of her film W.E., Madonna spoke about her directorial venture and plans for the future.

__BYLINE__868

The elusive Madonna is forced to face the press, something she has avoided in the last few years, to promote her latest directorial venture W.E., a romantic exploration of the mysterious connection across decades between two women—Wally Winthrop and Wallis Simpson— confronting the consequences of desire.

Madonna looks very serene as she enters the room wearing a red blouse, a black pencil skirt and black heels, all designed by Yves Saint Laurent. The bracelet she sports on her wrist is one-of-a-kind, made exclusively for her by Cartier. She is carrying a black purse designed by Givenchy and on her wrist is a Jacob & Co. watch. Around her neck she displays a W.E. necklace designed by Neil Lane. The expensive outfit somehow looks understated on her. I guess we are more used to seeing her on stage and in videos in outrageous outfits.

She sits down, takes a sip of water and is ready for my questions.

With W.E., what interested you in a parallel plot in order to tell the story of the royal romance?
986 I needed to have a character in the film that had a point of view; I didn’t want to do a biopic because I find that one person’s life is so complex that it would be impossible to sum it all up in two hours. It made more sense for me to tell the story from another person’s point of view; in that way, I wasn’t required to tell every aspect of her life. I also think that truth is subjective depending on who you are and where you’re standing. For instance, you could read about a person and have a completely different point of view from another person. So I created the character of Wally, who lives vicariously through the story of the Duchess. This gave me more freedom to tell the story.

Let’s talk about your visual style; which films or filmmakers inspire you?
986 The film that inspired me was La Vie en Rose because I really admire that film and one of the things that I liked about it was the length of the tracking shots. The director used the Steadicam a lot and I timed two of his shots, they were both five minutes long with absolutely no cuts. They were so beautifully choreographed. I love the Steadicam, there’s a certain gracefulness to it.

How secure were you while deciding to direct this film?
986 It does seem like I made a big leap from being a singer, performer and entertainer to making a film, and it is. It’s a completely different discipline, but when I do my shows, I’m completely involved in the minutiae of every aspect of the show. I check the seams on a costume, the buttons, the hooks, the hair and the makeup of the dancers. I’m involved with the lights, the rear-screen projections and choreography, so a lot of that goes into filmmaking. I’m a detail-oriented person and I would like to think of myself as a visionary. So I feel secure enough to direct.

Here, you have a story about love and obsession; what is the difference between the two?
986 Love is to be in a state of giving and obsession is a state of taking; when you are obsessed with something, you want something from it. When you’re in a state of love, you want to give and that’s a very big difference.

Like the character in the film, you’ve had your heart broken several times. How do you mend it?
986 Time mends a broken heart.

Photo Courtesy: Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Louis Vuitton

Edward VIII gave up a throne for love, what has a man given up for you?
986 I cannot give you anything specific, but I think that when you are in love with someone, you will always find yourself making some kind of sacrifice. That’s the nature of love; everyone makes sacrifices for the people they love. For instance, I love my children dearly and I have to make sacrifices for them on a regular basis. But no one has given up a kingdom for me!

I hear that you are a Francophile; the recurring song that you used in the film is Tu Déjà Aimé from Les Chansons. Am I right?
986 You are. Isn’t it great?

How come you know that song? Are you familiar with all things French?
986 Well, my children go to the Lycée Français de New York. I collaborate with a lot of French artists, fashion designers, photographers, directors, dancers and choreographers. They and the music producers have worked their way into my life, so I guess you can say that I have a lot of French influences around me.

Speaking of being influenced by French designers, you had eye-catching costumes in this film. How do you relate to the fashion of that period?
986 I’m fascinated by the ’20s and the ’30s. I’m a big fan of that era, particularly the couture houses of the day—Christian Dior, Vionnet, Balenciaga, and [Elsa] Schiaparelli. I think that was the beginning of a lot of careers and they were doing really interesting, innovative designs. I am also a big fan of Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Alexander McQueen.

What would one find if they looked into your jewellery box?
986 I have some nice pieces, like the bracelet I’m wearing, but I must tell you the nicest things that I have, I’ve given myself.

What does luxury mean to you?
986 Well, it means nothing if I’m not happy. So I feel privileged to have any kind of a luxurious life. I feel privileged to own a great work of art or a piece of couture or something like that, but it certainly isn’t the be-all and end-all of my life.

Madonna is ever changing in her creative life—performer, actor, dancer and filmmaker. Has anyone tried to box you in?
986 People have opinions about what they think I should or shouldn’t do, but I’ve never had anyone stop me from doing something. When I moved to New York from Detroit, I was a dancer and adventurous in a creative way. I never imagined that I was going to be a singer and a songwriter, but I left myself open to experiences, auditions and meeting people. So one thing led to the next; I was open to things even though I was trained as a dancer. When somebody said, “Hey, why don’t you try auditioning for this record producer or this musical,” I didn’t say, “I’m a dancer, I cannot do that.” So for me, moving from all these things to making a film isn’t really a big jump because it encompasses everything that I love.

How has your musical background influenced your writing and directing?
986 I think of writing as music, and a lot of times, when I am shooting or rehearsing a scene, I close my eyes and just listen to the actors or eliminate words or bits of dialogue because it doesn’t sound musical enough to me. There needs to be a rhythm to the speech and conversation, and also, in terms of the camera movement. There’s a lot of movement in my film. I think music is a good analogy for filmmaking.

Looking out onto the wide, expansive Sula vineyards you can see why the property is so perfect for a festival, and why in its fifth year, they were expecting close to 8,000 people over the course of two days.

In an effort to understand wine, you can take a tour through the cellars where the wine is prepared and stored, keeping in mind different factors and monitoring its progress right up to the point when it's bottled. A tasting followed where we invited to taste a selection of Sula wines, which included the refreshing sparkling wine Sula Brut, a Sauvignon Blanc a spiced, dry white wine, the Sula Blush Zinfandel a fruity, floral and fun Rose and the Rasa Shiraz, which is only produced in the best years and hence is considered a collector's wine.

Check out pictures of the people who performed and attended the Sula fest here

The festivities were kicked off by the bikers of the Harley Owners Group, who rode from Mumbai to Nashik and made quite an entry. Among the gastronomic options, you could choose from a variety of cuisines ranging from the conventional Lebanese and Chinese to interesting options like Spanish Tapas and Sushi counters. Not to feel completely disconnected from the common wine thread, there were also wine sorbets by Amore being served as a delicious dessert option among others.

Rajeev Samant- Founder and CEO- Sula Vineyards with Nitin Sawhney

DJ Sasha started the afternoon off with some upbeat, loungy tunes, followed by the BlackStrat Blues featuring Nikhil D'Souza who played an amazing set that completely matched the vibe of the evening. As the evening progressed, the tempo increased with the Reggae Rajahs featuring Steppah Style and Etienne Mbappe and Su La Take. Finally, Papon and the East India Company really got the crowd going, with people getting up off the comfortable lawns to dance along with the performance. Another interesting performance was by Ayush Shrestha from the Roc Fresh Crew, who gave the crowd a taste of some true-blue B-Boying.

Reggae Rajahs feat Steppa Style

There was no shortage of spirits with the likes of Mount Gay Rum, Remy Martin, Cointreau, Asahi, Hendrick's Gin, Budweiser and Balvenie all with their own counters garnering as much attention as Sula.

The Sulafest bazaar included fun stalls like the legendary Furtado's music store, funky accessory store Less Common More Sense, The Big Bag Theory, gift stalls Princesse K and Gift Architectz and even a stall of Sula merchandise itself . Also, to fill in time between performances, guests could participate in a variety of fun activities like tarot readings and grape crushing that truly brought the whole wine experience to life.

Day 2 kicked off with DJ Mescalito who got the crowd going with a two-hour set. Next, the popular Ankur and the Ghalat Family rocked the stage followed by Soulmate. And then, the much-awaited Nitin Sawhney took the stage in front of countless fans, some of whom had attended the second day precisely for him following his performance at Blue Frog earlier in the week. Dualist Inquiry ended the festival on a perfect note, making sure that everyone would look forward to Sula-festing again next year.

Since time immemorial, perfumes have been considered potions for seduction. And with the most romantic day of the year just around the corner, these fragrances are bound to set the mood for the evening.
“Valentine’s Day calls for sensual fragrances,” says Sonali Vengurlekar, Training Manager, Baccarose. “Scents that are ultra-feminine or ultra-masculine, which make you desirable, are recommended.” The inspiration for a perfume can find expression in different elements, be it the theme, the bottle design or even the ingredients.
In terms of ingredients, one should look for a fragrance containing elements that are known for their aphrodisiacal properties. Think ingredients like chocolate and patchouli. “Women can opt for fragrances that contain vanilla, chocolate or patchouli in the base notes,” shares Vengurlekar. “They give the fragrance just the perfect amount of warmth, richness and sensuality.” She
recommends perfumes like Thierry Mugler Angel EDT, Gucci Guilty Intense for women, Escada Desire Me, and CH 212 VIP. Speaking about the fragrances, Sonali shares, “Chilled vodka is the key ingredient in CH 212 VIP Men, along with lime caviar. Symroxane, with its salty, amber and slightly enveloping musk, reveals the sensuality of the skin.” On other hand, Gucci Guilty Intense, both for men and for women, are uncompromisingly sexy, provocative and dangerous. “Gucci Guilty Intense for men, which contains lemon and lavender, has been hardened by the coriander for a more metallic masculinity,” adds Vengurlekar. “In the women’s fragrance, feminine lilac surrenders to the seduction of warm amber notes, leading to an oriental fragrance.”

Ratna MVK, the Business Head for Giorgio Armani, Diesel and Ralph Lauren fragrances in India says, “I believe that Diesel Loverdose, mixture, is also a good option. Elements like vanilla and ambrox, known for their aphrodisiac properties evoke sensuality in the perfume.” Often a fragrance is an expression of love owing to its bottle design and theme. Vengurlekar states that Diesel Loverdose, with its deep purple, heart-shaped bottle, symbolises love and passion. Similarly, Loewe Quizás, Quizás, Quizás Pasión, contained in a bright, red flacon and Kenzo Flower Tag are romantic choices for the season.
Ralph Lauren Romance is a fragrance that Ratna adds to about purity—simple and with minimal detail—carried out with a sense of sophistication and romance. The bottle too is based on the pure and the refined—the romantic, smooth rectangular shape of both, the bottle and cap reflects an uncluttered ease and elegance,” she concludes.
So whether it’s the ingredients that could spice things up with your Valentine, or simply the vibe of the season demonstrated by the bottle, make your scented choice, to make a statement in love!

On the occasion of Valentine's Day, three couples from different walks of life share with us some of their fondest memories

Good friends first…
Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar

"Javed is very fond of saying that we're such good friends that even marriage couldn't ruin our friendship!" laughs Shabana Azmi. They got married in 1984, on either December 9 or 10. "That's disputed as the marriage ceremony went on beyond midnight," shares Javed. Shabana believes that her marriage with her poet husband, which is now in its 28th year, has been a successful one, as they have a deep respect for each other's space. "It's important to do things together as a couple, but for a relationship to flourish, the space you give each other is equally important," she says, adding that Javed makes her feel secure.

"I feel that there are two types of people who should never get married-those who agree on everything and those who disagree about everything," says Javed. Shabana and he agree on basic areas like relationships, money, social and political issues, etc. "Then one can keep arguing about whether the new sofa should be black or green!" he laughs.

According to Shabana, Javed's always on her mind. Every decision she takes or book she reads or a film she watches, she immediately anticipates Javed's reaction to it. "After 27 years of marriage, you get so intertwined with each other that it's impossible not to do that. And it's the same with him. In fact, Javed has even written a poem, titled Shabana, which talks precisely about this," she reveals.

The couple is not big on gifting material things to each other. "The time we spend together, watching movies, listening to music-those are far more precious to me than any solitaires," says Shabana. Even Javed believes that it's the little things that make their marriage special. He recounts an incident from several years ago. "There was a time when I was very fond of eating chicken fried rice. One day, Shabana ordered some Chinese food and forgot to order it. Although we ate what she ordered, I was very disappointed. The next day, she left to go somewhere out of Mumbai and in the afternoon, I got a delivery of chicken fried rice and a note that said, 'Oliver Twist, here is your bowl of soup!'

"Every vacation is a honeymoon!"
Natasha and Nikhil Chib

Their relationship started on a vacation, blossomed through a number of trips, and even today, visiting new places and experiencing different cultures is something Natasha and Nikhil Chib enjoy immensely. "In fact, I recommend travelling for couples," says Natasha, "When you travel with someone, you get to see different sides of them that you wouldn't see otherwise." Nikhil agrees. "You can't hide behind any falsities like make-up or short skirts either," he adds.

The couple met each other when Natasha, who is half American and half Indian, was visiting India. "I was 20 then and was least interested in settling down with anyone," she says. But Cupid had his own ideas. Nikhil decided to be their guide for the rest of their holiday to Thailand. "And that's where we fell in love, I guess!" he says, turning to look at his wife with a smile.

A shared passion is food. Being the Executive Chef & MD of Busaba, one of Mumbai's most famous eateries, it's natural to expect Nikhil to whip up some exotic dishes for his wife. And that does happen two to three times a week, Natasha tells us. One of her most romantic memories is of spending Valentine's Day at Mui Ne in Vietnam. The couple stayed at a hotel facing the ocean. "Nikhil blindfolded me, swept me up in his arms and carried me aboard a yacht, set up with the most incredible food that he'd prepared himself," she recalls with a smile.

It is his thoughtful nature that Natasha cherishes. "We've been together for eight years now, married for five. And there is romance, compatibility, understanding and respect," she says. And who says sorry first? "I do," Natasha immediately pipes in, "I am the 'sorry queen'!" And Nikhil? "I have no problem with apologising. I just say it when it's needed."

Love, laughter, and romance!
Roya and Adnan Sami

For Roya Sami, the memory of her proposal remains one of the funniest memories of her relationship with hubby Adnan Sami. "One month after we met in Mumbai, she had come to visit me," recalls Adnan, "I had just woken up, with my hair all over the place and dressed in my long pyjamas. I went down on one knee and asked her to marry me." And did she agree right away? "Yes, she did, but her next reaction was, 'You could have changed your clothes at least!'" he guffaws, to which Roya replies with a smile, "That's okay; the visual will always remain with me!"

The singer, who is a self-admitted die-hard romantic, says he's grateful to God for sending Roya his way. Considering the ups and downs he's been through in his personal life (he's had two failed marriages), Adnan says he could have been very apprehensive about falling in love again. "From her perspective, she could have been more guarded, thinking, this man has quite a history, but she felt she wanted to take that chance," he says.

The two years of their marriage have been filled with love and laughter. "He's never serious, at least with me" she says, looking at her husband fondly. She complains that she's had to watch a lot of movies ever since she got married. Adnan, who's a movie buff, insists that she stay up-to-date with the classics at least. The couple loves to cook together-he makes excellent biryani, while she's a pro at Afghani food.

"Her arrival in my life has been a blessing. I really value her and the way she's enhanced my life." So how would they describe their two years together? "A gift," says Adnan. "Beautiful!
