LFW 2013: Manish Malhotra’s Show Celebrates 100 Years of Cinema
In a country where Bollywood and fashion are interlaced, Manish Malhotra celebrated 100 years of Cinema at the Lakme Fashion Week. The collection started with monochrome inspiration from the black and white era and went on to explore the hippies of the 70s. To celebrate his reign in Bollywood, he then explored his trademark chiffon sarees of the 90s.
The show was opened by Karan Johar in an ornate black kurta followed my veteran directors Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and Zoya Akhtar. Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan – boys from Student of the Year – then took to the stage in silk jackets. The saree-clad Priyanka Chopra followed with a pop of neon. Asha Bhosle, Bhanu Athaiya and Hema Malini were then ushered on the stage as an element of surprise. But it was the stunning duo of Kajol and Karisma Kapoor that stole the show. Kajol took the stage in a lace blouse and neon-border saree, while Kapoor stuck to her trademark anarkalis.
The show was complemented by a timeline of iconic cinematic moments – starting with Raj Kapoor’s era to Abhay Deol's portrayal of Dev D. With SRK’s slow motion runs and arm-flinging moments, the show was one thumka shot of turning into a Bollywood masala film.
