Planning the Perfect Wedding

Weddings are usually elaborate affairs, and Indian weddings even more so. With myriad functions like the sangeet, mehendi, cocktail party, reception, and of course, the actual wedding ceremony, the affair is nothing short of a theatrical production. With many details - venue, cuisine, photographer and ensembles - to be considered, it becomes important to plan, in order to streamline the process.
Embrace the Checklist
First and foremost, the couple needs to envision their perfect wedding. "Many couples today want an intimate wedding celebration," says Candice Pereira, Creative Head and Co-founder, Marry Me Wedding Planners. "However, we all know, that's not always possible. So, one of the first and most important things to do is to prepare your guest list, after which you have a realistic idea of your wedding planning." It eases the task, if the couple knows exactly what they want. She suggests keeping clippings and references of your ideas ready, so you can explain your vision as you move forward. Hiring the services of a coordinator to execute the assorted tasks is a good idea. "Your basic checklist of a dream wedding is not the be-all and end-all of how good a wedding is. A wedding is an amalgamation of so many different things and that's where a wedding planner comes in, to ensure how each element can be spruced up to provide the best experience for everyone," explains Sneh Punjabi, Founder - Partner, Svaha: Weddings and Special Events.
The trend of themed weddings has been gaining ground in the last few years. Breaking away from tradition, many couples today want their wedding to mirror their own tastes and personalities. According to Punjabi, a themed wedding allows the couple to enjoy more creative freedom. "Themes can be interpreted in various ways, using a certain element in the décor, or even a particular colour. We organised a wedding where every event had a different colour combination, floral décor, and lighting - all of which lent itself to an overall versatile experience," she says.
The Perfect Destination Wedding
The trend of destination weddings remains popular. Pereira advises keeping in mind certain factors such as the time of year, weather, connectivity to the destination and the availability of local Indian vendors at the destination while planning such a wedding. And what are the most popular destinations? "It really depends on what you are looking for," says Pereira. "In India, Goa is always popular for a fun, beach wedding, Jaisalmer for a Rajasthani wedding and Kerala for an intimate wedding. International destinations like Mauritius, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bali and Turkey are great options right now," she shares.

Wedding celebrations and elaborate dining spreads go hand in hand. The type of cuisine you finally opt for requires considerable planning. Keeping it simple is Punjabi's mantra, unless of course, you have an unlimited budget and guests with an adventurous palate. She also recommends that the food should complement the atmosphere. "I do believe that it is the day when you should be happy. Keep in mind your guests' preferences and likes, but ultimately, choose what you want. Don't get carried away and try to imitate others; be true to your knowledge and understanding of food and settle on a menu that you are comfortable with." She also advises sampling the food before you book the caterer.
Capture the Moment
Given that your wedding is one of the most special days of your life, the memories will be cherished forever. Preserving these memories call for the services of a good photographer. Aditi Kapoor, Partner, Experiential Weddings, believes that a photographer is one of the most important aspects to keep in mind for a wedding. "The choice should be based on your comfort level, the photographer's experience, and an eye for detail that will capture the right emotions," she says. "Today, wedding photography has reached a new level, with photographers' teams expanding into videography, movie-making and artistic lifestyle photography." It's an event of a lifetime, so ensure that you make an informed decision to preserve the beautiful memories in the best way possible.
