Larger Than Life: Largest Stone Discoveries

While the smallest precious stones can cost a fortune, let’s take a look at some of the biggest ones we’ve seen.
The fifth largest emerald that’s ever been found and the biggest to be cut into facets, this literally football sized rock is mostly mistaken for a watermelon that has shot its usual size. The precious stone is going up for an auction with a reviewed value of $1.15 million (approx Rs. 5.78 crore). The 57,500 carat emerald is currently owned by Regan Reaney who says that one must see it to believe about its existence. It is indeed majestic. The stone was mined from Brazil but its exact location is being kept secret.
South Australia has just found a star stone is one of its field, it in a n Opal Matrix and not just a normal one. The size of this monstrous stone is 55,000 carats and its discovery is credited to the famous designer Stuart Hughes and his associates. The dimensions of this wonder are 30 cm in length, 15-20 cm height and 4 cm thickness. Opals have come and gone but this one is sure to leave a mark which will last for long. Its estimated value is about $1 million (approx Rs. 5 crore) and could only get higher. The last discovery of the largest opal will be erased from people’s memories with the blink of an eye because this stone is nearly ten times its size. While this stone doesn’t seem to be on sale, let’s see how it’s showcased to the world.
From out of space…and yes, quite literally so. Planets have always been objects man likes to tinker with. The red planet, our neighbour has been an experimental platform for time immemorial. With all the crashes, meteors often touch our planet and leave some presents – an estimated 110 kilos of Mars rocks have been deposited on Earth. Most space lovers are die hard collectors of pieces from out of space so in practical terms these weighty rocks have an equally heavy price. Believe it or not, a small section of Mars rock can cost up to ten times more than its weight in gold! Darryl Pitt, a meteorite dealer shared that he charges $11,000 (approx Rs. 5.53 lakhs) to $22,500 (approx Rs. 11.31 lakhs) an ounce depending on the sample piece.
These discoveries have certainly added names to the new wonders of the world and of luxury.
