The process of ironing your hair till it's waterfall straight isn't a new concept, but the concerns associated with using a flat iron are just as old as the practice itself. Urvi Sanghavi, Senior Stylist at b:blunt shares ways in which you can battle the heat!
To begin with, how exactly does a flat iron work?
A heated appliance [such as] an iron essentially helps in smoothening out the hair cuticles. This makes the locks appear straight and shiny, and it's mostly used to straighten wavy or curly hair.
Why does consistent use of an iron lead to damaged hair?
When an iron is used on the hair without applying any product, hair comes in direct contact with the heat which is the main cause of the damage.
How can one control or prevent this damage?
You can prevent the damage by using an appropriate product before ironing your hair-choose a heat protecting serum or cream. Also, the iron should be set to the right temperature; it should not be too hot.
What are the correct steps to using a flat iron?
Shampoo and condition the hair, apply a heat protecting product and blast dry your hair to let it dry completely. Once your hair is dry, iron your hair layer by layer.
How important is it to use a heat protecting serum?
A serum is almost critical since heat is the evil force that weakens your hair. The serum acts as a barrier to keep direct heat away from the hair, leaving them in a glossy state.
How regularly can one straighten their strands without waning hair quality?
Ironing should not become a regular practice as it can dry out the hair. Limit it to once or twice a week.
Often, one invests in an iron, but fails to receive the expected results. What should one look out for when purchasing it?
Always purchase a branded iron, one from a good company (professional brand), even if you have to pay an extra sum. This will not only last longer, but also give you perfectly finished hair. Also, ensure that it is ceramic-coated and temperature controlled.

Playful curls! You can curl your hair with the help of an iron and do away with the purchase of tongs to curl your hair. Curl your hair in sections for the process to be easier, begin to curl from one side (from the base of your neck to the middle portion of your head) before taking on the other side. Roll a selected section between the iron plates and hold the hair for a few seconds (caution: not for too long). You can roll the iron away or towards yourself, that will result in different types of curls, but remember to stay on the direction you choose. For bigger curls, take larger sections, whereas for tight curls, opt for smaller sections.
