Warhol’s Coke Bottle Sells For $35Mn
American artist Andy Warhol’s painting of a Coca-Cola bottle sold for an awesome $35.4 million at a Sothbey’s auction in New York on Tuesday.
Bloomberg says, the 7-foot tall painting depicts a soft drink advertisement for the Quaker State Coca-Cola Bottling Co that Warhol, one of the 20th century’s most popular contemporary artists, stumbled upon in Pittsburgh’s Byzantine Catholic World newspaper. It is one of four painting Warhol made of the iconic Coke bottle.
Warhol is on top at this week's contemporary art sales in New York - his painting of Elizabeth Tailor also sold on Tuesday for $63 million, and several more works will go on the block at Sotheby’s and Christie’s this week.
The Coke bottle painting was sold on Tuesday by American artist Elizabeth Richebourg Rea.
