Billionaires are constantly on the lookout for haute properties, better still if they come with a tag of 'most expensive'. A 54-year-old Russian steel tycoon, Vladimir Lisin, with a net worth of an astounding £15 billion, bought the 300-year-old Park Place mansion for £140 million. Bought by developer Michael Spink in 2007, for about £40 million, the house is set in 300 acres of land in Oxfordshire, with 200 acres of parkland.

Knocking One Hyde Park off the top spot as the most expensive residence in the UK, Park Place is currently UK's most expensive home. It has two golf courses, 10 tenanted cottages and another eight in need of renovation. The outbuildings include some stables, a barrel-vaulted Grecian grotto dating from the 18th century, and a boat house on the river Thames too. The home boasts 27 bedrooms, of which 10 have en suite bathrooms and they still have the original huge stone fireplaces and stained glass windows.

The Franco- Italianate estate once belonged to Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707 - 1751), the eldest son of George II. Its more recent occupants include John Latsis, a Greek shipping billionaire and a local council that used the building to house a school.

And like most castle stories, rumour has it that the ghost of Mary Blandy, who was accused of poisoning her father in 1752, is said to haunt the grounds.
