Women are reclaiming the kitchen. The fine dining industry, like most other industries is very male-dominated. Maybe, there are more men who love to cook, but there are quite a few women who are cooking up quite a storm, pun intended! Many female chefs are beating their male counterparts at Top Chef to being awarded Michelin stars for their exceptional culinary skills.
Elena Arzak is the fourth-generation chef and heads Arzak, that has been ranked amongst one of the top 10 restaurants in the world for the past five years and also the only Bisque restaurant to win all three Michelin Stars. Food runs in the blood in the Arzak family and Elena Arzak comes from a lineage of fine dining with both men and women in the family are known to be maestros at seducing the taste buds. Last year Elena’s father, Juan Mari Arzak (also known as the is known as the father of New Basque Cuisine) received a lifetime achievement award for his long and storied career at the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards ceremony. And, this year she will step on the same stage to accept the award for the Best Female Chef.
Elena has trained under culinary greats and classical chefs like Alain Ducasse and Adrià. She chose to return to her family’s Basque restaurant, where she works with her father in a kitchen that is a perfect mix of contemporary and classic.
