Shangri-La Mumbai's first guest, Heinrich Johann Meier, gets a warm Indian welcome
The Shangri-La hotel has opened in Mumbai just in time for Christmas and the New Year.
The tall glass structure, which rises above the Palladium at Lower Parel, features 390 rooms and 32 suites. It is the second luxury hotel to open in the area, after the Four Seaons Hotel, which opened in 2008. The second Shangri-La in India - the first opened in Delhi in 2005 - the hotel towers over Mumbai's shopping hub, Phoenix Mills.
Design features include a lavish lobby adorned with Rajasthani tikri work, while the rooms channel a more contemporary style. While details are sketchy, we know guests will have access to an outdoor swimming pool, health club and Shangri-La's signature CHI spa, plus three restaurants and four bars. Connoisseurs should also keep an eye out for a dedicated cigar shop that is set to open at the Shangri-La.
The latest five-star property to open in Mumbai, the opening of the Shangri-La hotel adds weight to Lower Parel's status as an entertainment hub in the city.
