Power Dinner: UN Secy Gen at Ambani's Antilla

It was a busy weekend for every social bug with a string of engagements to attend. The social blitzkrieg kicked off with the grand power dinner hosted by Neeta Ambani at Antilla, in honour of the UN Secretary General Ban ki-Moon and his wife Yoo Soon-Taek. The list of 10 Bollywood celebrities eventually included a bevy of stars - right from Ambani favourites Raju Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, to Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor, and a very, very sharply dressed Farhan Akhtar to name a few.
Once inside, a core group of industrialists, actors and activists, including Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar, Leander Paes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anil Kapoor listened as Ban ki-Moon spoke passionately about the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and the urgent need to create a global awareness campaign to prevent the girl child and the mother from dying.

Citing frightening statistics for India, the Secretary General minced no words when he said that the government would be considered a failure if no one paid attention to how poor rural women keep dying.
Ban ki-Moon's message to Bollywood was especially significant. "I can make as many speeches as I want but you people are so loved that if you bring visibility to this subject people will listen, and it will create deep awareness. And awareness brings commitment," he said.
This was followed by a reception for 250 guests where the Ambanis committed themselves to the MDG. The highlight of this session was Ban Ki-Moon's speech, which doffed a hat to the state language. "Mulgi shikli pragati zhalee" he said to a thunderous applause and also spoke about how the hand that rocks the cradle, rules the world, all in chaste Marathi.
