In an exclusive auction held in New York, Christie’s sold the Princie Diamond – an intense pink 34.64 carat sparkler – for nearly $40 million, crossing the record of $24.3 million set by the Wittelsbach Diamond in December 2008.
Having originated from the Golconda mines, the diamond comes with a noble history. It belonged to the Nizam of Hyderabad until it was purchased by the London branch of Van Cleef & Arpels, for £46,000. It was then rechristened ‘Princie’ at the Paris branch of the store, in honour of the Prince of Baroda, son of Maharani Sita Devi.
The world finest pink diamond now belongs to anonymous buyer who bid over the phone for a precise sum of $39,323,750.
