Gallerists Want to Solve Delhi's India Art Fair Crisis

This evening, the top nine gallerists of the city are meeting at a café in South Mumbai to discuss the crisis over the India Art Fair in Delhi. Owners of Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke, Volte, Chemould Prescott Road, The Guild, Project 88, Gallery Maskara, Chatterjee & Lal, Lakeerein, and Sakshi are brainstorming over chai on how to deal with the increase in booth price coupled with a reduction the number of dates, which has led to widespread concern in the art community. The fifth edition of the fair, usually a five-day affair right after the Jaipur Lit fest, will be held from February 1-3 next year, which happens to be a weekend.

As one of the nine gallerists, pointed out, "Given the kind of money they invest, most buyers would take at least three days to make up their mind about the art pieces they buy. Besides, bank transactions don't happen on Sundays, which leaves the patron only two days to make their payment arrangements. Then there are many other activities coinciding with the fair in Delhi. Given that we're around only for three days now, where do you think the art enthusiasts will go? It's important for us to support the only art fair of such a scale in our country. And we need to raise this issue as it will affect our market."
