Vickram Sethi and his son Tushar's AstaGuru is set to hold its sixth auction, which will feature paintings of Modern Art masters. And the top four works in the auction are by Tyeb Mehta, Jehangir Sabavala, SH Raza and MF Husain.
The Tyeb of course take pride of place - with an opening bid of Rs 2.5 crore - as one of the first diagonal series painting the artist had made. The Raza carries a tag of Rs 1.7 crore. The Sabavala painting, which has been creating considerable buzz in the fraternity and which is from a private Bombay collection, has come up for auction for the first time. Finally, there is a 14-foot long Husain first exhibited in Venezuela in 1983 when he was invited to visit and speak on India at the Indian Trade Fair.
Considering how online auctions are perfectly tailored for the serious art buyers who like their privacy, the format has so far worked well for the Sethis. Just that the big spenders are not shopping these days, as recent auctions of these masters have shown.
