(L-R) Sabavala's Vespers 1 and Souza's Still Life with Bread and Fish
London auction house Bomham's has put together a rather impressive list of artists for their up-coming Modern and Contemporary South Asian art sale.
Lots include those by MF Husain, SH Raza, Jehangir Sabavala, Jamini Roy, Rabindranath Tagore, Avinash Chandra, FN Souza, B Prabha, George Keyt, Sadequain, Jamil Naqsh and AR Chughtai.
Gayatri Juneja, Bonham's India representative says, "This year's sale has some particularly important works by major artists. A good selection for the modern art market and most importantly every work is fresh to the market from private collections."
On the Block
One auction highlight is Husain's Blue Lady (£70,000-£90,000), which belonged to the private UK collection of John Hay. The painting was bought from Delhi's Dhoomimal Gallery in the 1950s and presented to his mother, Elizabeth Partridge, by her sister as a wedding present. At the time, Elizabeth wrote for both, The News Chronicle and The Times of India in New Delhi. The painting was bought after Elizabeth's sister met Husain and fell in love with his work.
Gayatri also points out important works by Sabavala. "I am personally very excited about three works by Sabavala. In particular Vespers 1 (£100,000-£150,000) is a very important work from the artist's oeuvre which is definitely a highlight. Additionally we have another work from the same period, yet different in subject matter and colour pallete and also an early still life on paper. This is definitely an important auction for Sabavala lovers. Other important works from the auction include Souza's Still Life with Bread and Fish and untitled work by SH Raza amongst some very special works by Pakistani masters like Jamil Naqsh, Ismail Gulgee and Allah Bux," she says.
Bonham's Modern and Contemporary South Asian art sale will be held on June 7 at New Bond Street, London.
