Judith Leiber struck while the iron was hot. The luxury American handbag brand roped in Indian designer Suneet Verma in 2008 to design a collection of couture handbags and clutches. Verma went on to design Judith Leiber Ganesha bags that have been used as art deco pieces. Within no time, style icons like Sex and the City’s Sarah Jessica Parker and the bootilicious singer Jennifer Lopez were carrying his designs on the red carpet.

Then there’s designer Meera Mahadevia, whose metal bags embellished with stones were showcased at the Vendome Luxury Exhibition in Paris earlier this year. Her couture collection retails in luxury stores like Neiman Marcus in the US and Selfridges in London as well as luxury shopping destination DLF Emporio in New Delhi.

You’ll also spot Hollywood beauties like Sienna Miller and Kate Hudson carrying totes designed by Radhika Gupta. This bag designer has also specially created a range of multi-colored ethnic bags for Eat, Pray, Love actress, Julia Roberts.
Nandini Mariwala's collection
Mumbai-based Nandini Mariwala is also a name to be reckoned with when it comes to handbags. Her clientele includes Hollywood stars like Lindsay Lohan and Halle Berry as well as international royalty. Her current collection of day bags – all limited edition – are hand-knotted and embroidered. The designer’s bags are sold via luxury store Harrods in London.
Maybe it’s time Louis Vuitton and Prada took a back seat now.
