'I Want to Make a Woman Look Good'

Designer Amit GT put together his first show in Singapore in 2005. Since then, the NIFT graduate has gone from strength to strength. He's dressed some of American TV's biggest stars, including Desperate Housewives' Eva Longoria and Teen Wolf's Holland Roden; and Rosario Dawson wore his Kinshasa dress on the September 2012 cover of Latina magazine.
Here, the designer talks luxury, fashion and designing for the modern woman.
What is luxury fashion to you?
Luxury is a visual and tactile experience derived from beautiful, well-crafted things that gives us a sense of pride and privilege when you own them. Fashion on the other hand, is seasonal but luxury experience stays with you for a much longer time. Luxury fashion presides highest on the qualitative curve of fashion that is why it is always the preferred choice of celebrities, socialites and those who cannot resist buying the latest collections.
Can you describe your collection style?
I do not like to mix too many colours in one outfit unless the outfit is strategically colour blocked or has a thematic print. My approach towards style is to make a woman look good and not just to make good looking clothes. I can [anything from] be a minimalist architect to a maximalist wiz but the objective remains the same. I would always want the Amit GT woman to get compliments like, "Oh, you are looking gorgeous!" rather than "Your dress has amazing work".

Can you tell us about your experience of dressing Rosario Dawson?
Men in Black 2 and Zookeeper star Rosario Dawson donned a dress from my Spring Summer 2012 collection [on the September cover of Latina magazine]. It's a very bold look, which she has carried off so well. The golden dress has an African theme with oversized dolman sleeves. Previously, I have dressed Eva Longoria, Holland Roden and nearly a dozen Hollywood stars.
Can you describe the type of woman that wears your creations?
My creations are for those who look for luxe, power and seduction through clothes. The Amit GT woman understands the power of dressing. It doesn't matter what age you are or what shape you are. You don't have to have the body of a siren to feel good about yourself, instead it's about your attitude towards yourself. It's important that woman should feel very 'today' in my clothes. My creations will soon be available in India at my flagship store at The Westin, Gurgaon.
Who, according to you, is the most influential fashion icon?
It has to be Madonna. She has been my perennial inspiration. I like the fact that she changes her avatar like women change their clothes. She knows the power of dressing and uses it like no one's business.
What are your favourite colours, fabrics and patterns to work with and why?
My favorites are black, whites, nudes and champagnes. I think every woman looks good in such colours. I like to use crepe de chine, chiffon and lace for summers and duchess satin, gazar, techno fabrics like neoprene and cashmere for winters.
If you could dress one person in the world, whom would it be?
There are plenty of women out there I would like to dress but my current favorite to dress up are Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively and Thandie Newton.
