Maserati to Launch a 'Cheaper' Luxury Sedan
Maserati will launch the 'cheaper' Ghibli
The new four-door car, which gets its name from the Arabic word for the hot winds that roast the Sahara, is set to take on the likes of the BMW 5 series, Audi's A6 and Mercedes-Benz's E Class. According to one Maserati manager who spoke to Bloomberg Businessweek, the plan is to 'steal buyers from the Germans'.
And Maserati plans to do that with plenty of style. The supercar marquee plans to rev up appearance with leather from 101-year-old furniture maker Plotrona Frau; under the hood, mechanics are supplied by sister company, Ferrari. So the base version Ghibli comes with a 330hp V6 engine, while the top-of-the-line Ghibli S Q4 comes with a 410hp engine and can go from 0-100kmph in 4.8 seconds. The price too, goes from $65,600 to $75,700. The 2013 Maserati Quattroporte sells for $127,750 to $135,700.
So will Maserati be able to convince buyers who are 'bored with the BMW' to buy the Ghibli? Time will tell.
