With lunchtime procedures gaining ground, an increasing number of women are now turning to non-surgical lip-enhancing treatments. Less invasive with minimal downtime, these procedures are fairly simple, yet prove to be effective. Dr. Swati Srivastava, dermatologist, VLCC, Mumbai sheds light on the latest procedures you can opt for.
As opposed to surgical procedures, why would you recommend a non-surgical treatment?
Non-surgical procedures are minimally invasive. Here, both the procedure time and the downtime are less as compared to surgical treatments. The results of non- surgical treatments are reversible and temporary. If the person is not satisfied with the result, it can be reversed. Surgical procedures have permanent results that cannot be reserved.
What are the latest non-surgical lip enhancing treatments available today?
Lip enhancement procedures improve the lips by making them fuller, more defined and youthful. Non-surgical lip augmentation is performed with dermal fillers like Juvederm. Generally, these are very brief procedures. The latest non-surgical lip enhancing treatments are:
Defining Lip Border: This treatment is used to improve and redefine the lip border with a small amount of filler. It acts similar to lip liners, but gives a more natural look to the shape and overall appearance of the lips.
Lip Volumising: This procedure adds volume for softer and fuller lips. Thin lips can be enhanced by using dermal fillers on the lips.
Lip Tattooing: The procedure is usually used to restore the existing outline of the lips or to redefine the shape using permanent colour. A preferred lip colour may also be applied to the fleshy part of the lips.
Can you elaborate on the procedure involved?
Defining Lip Border: A small amount of filler is injected in the border area of the lips to define the shape. It does not volumise the lip, but outlines the border to make it look sharper.
Lip Volumising: A certain quantity of dermal fillers are injected into the fleshy part of the lips. The amount used varies according to the shape and size of the lips and desired results.
Lip Tattooing: In colour tattooing, natural colour is delivered below the skin of the lips using a small needle. The inks, used for this purpose, are made of iron oxide or titanium dioxide pigments. For lip tattooing, tattoo guns are not preferred as the fleshy part of the lip is very sensitive and it might prove to be too painful.
What should ideally be the frequency for these treatments?
Dermal fillers cannot provide permanent results. However, the full appearance can be maintained by repeating the treatment over time. The follow-up injections are usually needed every six months. Most of the pigments used for colour tattooing are permanent ones. But they might fade with the course of time. Sunlight can play a key role in lightening the colour of tattooed lips. Repatching of the tattoo can be done to reduce the fading effecs.
What are the precautions one needs to take? Are there any side-effects?
There will hardly be any side- effects if the treatment is done by a well-trained dermatologist or cosmetologist. Occasionally, the patient might experience swelling and bruising in the treated area. Non-surgical treatments are simply lunchtime procedures. Generally, you do not need to take any precautions. But it is recommended that you refrain from kissing for seven days after the procedure.
How to Get the Perfect Pout
The cost of the lip volumising treatment is determined by the amount of dermal filler used. The cost of dermal fillers is Rs 30,000 per filler. Colour tattooing may cost between Rs 8,000-10,000.
