Lack of sleep, stress and other factors often lead to dark circles and puffiness under the eyes. According to Dr. K. E. Mukadam, Dermatologist and Cosmetologist, Laser Cure, and Breach Candy Hospital, under eye care is just as important as cleansing, toning and moisturising. How different is the skin under and around the eyes from other parts of the face?
How different is the skin under and around the eyes from other parts of the face?
The skin around the eyes is 10 times thinner than the skin on the other parts of the face. Since eyes are the focal point of a person's face, bulges and wrinkles not only interfere with vision, but also result in a tired, sad appearance. The area around the eyes is quite sensitive and should be treated delicately. Exposure to the sun, smoking and even a casual habit like that of rubbing your eyes can lead to the loss of elasticity of the skin.
What daily regimen can one follow to ensure that the skin under the eye remains healthy?
. Drink plenty of water as it plays a crucial role in maintaining the skinfs elasticity.
. Avoid staying out in the sun. Overexposure to UV rays causes pigment-producing cells to mature abnormally. This results in age spots and uneven pigmentation.
. Use cotton balls when removing makeup to avoid unnecessary tugging on the delicate tissue.
. Ensure that you use trusted products for the delicate skin around the eyes.
. Get a good night's sleep to avoid dark circles and swollen eyes.
. Avoid the intake of tobacco products.
One of the most pertinent problems is that of dark circles. What are its main causes and how can one get rid of them?
The most prominent factors leading to dark circles are prolonged illness, inadequate sleep and hereditary issues. In order to get rid of dark circles, one must get good rest. A person who sleeps well is less likely to develop dark circles. Also, check your eating habits. Eat healthy to keep the under eye skin glowing. Additionally, smoking greatly deteriorates the skin around the eyes; so, keep away from it as far as possible. On a lighter note, relaxation helps a great deal.
Another key concern is that of puffiness of eyes. How can one avoid that?
. Nothing works better than cold cucumber slices placed on the eyelids. Leave them on the eyelids for 15-20 minutes. The cooling and soothing effect of the cucumber will reduce the swelling around the eyes.
. You can also make use of refrigerated tea bags instead of cucumber slices. Also, make it a habit to splash ice-cold water on your eyelids a few times a day.
. Mix some aloe vera juice with Vitamin E oil and apply it under the eyes on a regular basis to see drastic changes.
. Under eye creams with a cool base will eventually lead to a decrease in puffiness.
Does the use of makeup affect the skin around the eyes? If yes, what precautions can be taken?
There's no doubt that one must be really careful while applying makeup, especially around the eyes. Branded products should be applied to ensure they don't harm the skin. The one precaution that can be taken is the manner in which you wipe off the makeup. Remove all products with soaked cotton to avoid being rough on the area. Also, wash your face properly after the removal of makeup.
What is your take on the use of sunscreen and sunglasses?
With the environmental conditions that prevail around us, it's mandatory to apply sunscreen as it protects your skin. Since application of products around the eyes is not always possible, the use of sunglasses comes handy in avoiding direct contact with the sun and dust particles.
