By ALISHA FERNANDES, TIME N STYLE   Apr 12th 2012 at 6:00AM Time n Style RATED

Kalki Koechlin

Maybe it’s her French descent or her unique choice of films, but nothing about Kalki Koechlin is conventional. Her big debut with Dev D, which had her playing a modern-day Chandramukhi, adapted from the classic novel Devdas by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, earned her a Filmfare Award. From then on, her movie repertoire went on to include offbeat films like Shaitan, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, That Girl In Yellow Boots and My Friend Pinto. Her movie Shanghai with Abhay Deol (yet again) and Emraan Hashmi is slated to release early this June, and she has a few more in the pipeline. In a short span of time, she has created an identity and made her presence felt among the biggest stars and by the looks of it, it’s going to stand strong for years to come. Her mantra for beauty and the rest of her life? Going ‘au naturel’...

What does your beauty regimen consist of?

Kalki Koechlin

I try to keep everything natural and chemical-free as much as possible. From the skincare products I use to my makeup and diet, it’s all natural. One of the most important things I do is to drink a lot of water as well as nimboo pani through the day, in huge quantities. When it comes to my diet, I don’t really have any rules. I try to eat vegetarian, home-cooked food as much as possible. For exercise, I like to swim for an hour every morning.

What is your approach to hair care?

Kalki Koechlin

Hair care is essential in this line of work because it can get really unhealthy if you don’t pay attention to it. I use the Biotique Bio Soya Protein shampoo and conditioner regularly as it’s the most basic and important thing to do. I also make it a point to apply sesame hair oil on my hair, once a week, to keep it nourished and healthy.

What is the first thing you apply on your skin every morning?

Kalki Koechlin

After freshening up every morning, the first thing that I do for my skin is to apply a generous amount of the Nutriganics Day Cream from The Body Shop.

Which is the one beauty product you swear by?

Kalki Koechlin

The one beauty product that has always worked wonders for me is the range of body butters by The Body Shop. They are excellent for keeping your skin moisturised.

You don’t leave your house without this beauty product, and why?

Kalki Koechlin

In my opinion, lip balm. It’s all a girl needs, apart from a smile.

What is your quick beauty fix?

Kalki Koechlin

The best thing to use for a quick beauty fix is natural aloe vera, straight from the plant. It’s extremely easy to grow at home and all you have to do is apply it on a clean face. It is known for it’s moisturising and cooling properties along with many healing benefits.

Do you enjoy spa treatments? Is there a place you’d recommend to our readers?

Kalki Koechlin

I don't visit the spa too often, but there is one in Lokhandwala, Mumbai called Bethsaida Spa, which has an excellent dry, Thai massage.

How do you prevent skin and hair damage, especially since you’re in a field, which can be stressful?

Kalki Koechlin

My hair needs a trim every two months to keep a check on split-ends. It’s necessary to do this because it helps the hair to grow out healthier. Also, for nourishment, sesame oil treatments help. For the face, I find that it’s more about diet than any treatment or product. Eating non-oily, home-cooked food helps a lot.

What is your definition of beauty?

Kalki Koechlin

To me, very simply put, beauty is honesty.

Who is your role model when it comes to beauty?

Kalki Koechlin

It definitely would have to be Juliette Binoche. She is such a natural beauty and the best part is that she hasn't let herself get affected by the pressures of fame to use artificial treatments as you grow older.
